Lawyers/Judges and Wigs?

Category: Random Issue

Last night, went for a drink with my boyfriend. The TV was broadcasting a Cantonese drama, showing a scene in the court, where lawyers and judge were debating a case. Then my boyfriend started to ask, “Have you ever wonder why lawyers must wear a wig?” Well..I don’t know as well. But it seems to be so natural that when you think about lawyers or judges, you (most of us) will have a picture of them wearing a wig in your mind!

Is there an affair between lawyers/judges and wigs? =P Bring along this curiosity back home, I googled for the answer. This is what I found:
Why are wigs worn by lawyers?

Although English legal dress has a long history, it has for the most part evolved without written regulation. Before the 17th century lawyers did not wear wigs, but professional discipline required that their hair and beards should be moderately short.

Nevertheless, the introduction of wigs into polite society during the reign of Charles II (1660-1685) was an innovation, and lawyers began wearing wigs in the 1680’s.

In the 1860’s, lawyers were permitted to remove their wigs during a heat wave. This attracted some comment in the press and it was suggested that wigs be abandoned altogether by the legal profession. Although the proposal met with little support, it has been a common occurrence ever since for judges to allow wigs to be left off in very hot weather.

And there’s a book called Legal Habits: A Brief Sartorial History of Wig, Robe & Gown by Ede and Ravenscroft. Get to know about this book (pdf version available) from Michel-Adrien. I’ve downloaded this e-book (from Michel’s blog) but I’m too lazy to read.

So it’s because wig was once a great fashion back in the 17th century and because of professional discipline they wore wigs until today, this practice is still going on. But wait, according to BBC News, there’s an argument over this issue.

What I think of is…WTH with those wigs? Remember Commodore Norrington? Captain Jack Sparrow is much more handsome.
