Indonesian Song: Terang Bulan

Remember I ever posted an issue on the music used for the national anthem? Now I really get confused on which song was the original. Is it the state anthem of Perak Darul Ridzuan – “Terang Bulan” or the Indonesian song Terang Bulan?

But hey, this Indonesian version of Terang Bulan (Moon Shine) sounds nice too. And the lyrics is funny, at least for me it is.

Terang Bulan Lyrics
Terang bulan
Terang bulan di kali
Buaya timbul disangkalah mati
Jangan percaya mulutlah lelaki
Berani sumpah ‘tapi takut mati
Jangan percaya mulutlah lelaki
Berani sumpah ‘tapi takut mati

Waktu potong padi di tengah sawah
Sambil bernyanyi riuh rendah
Memotong padi semua orang
Sedari pagi sampai petang

Waktu potong padi di tengah sawah
Sambil bernyanyi riuh rendah
Bersenang hati sambil bersuka
Tolonglah kami bersama sama

Translated Terang Bulan Lyrics (Moon Shine)
The moon is shining
Moon shine reflects on the river
Floating crocodile thought to be dead
Don’t believe man’s saying
Dare to pledge but afraid of dying

Whilst cutting paddy in the middle of the field
While singing noisily
Cutting paddy is everyone
Unrealised morning to evening

Whilst cutting paddy in the middle of the field
While singing noisily
Heart at ease while having fun
Help us together

  1. Indonesians honor the fact that Terang Bulan became Malaya’s nat anthem but nobody can forbid them if they want to sing it as it was already a pop song before
