Merging

Category: Blogging

Merging…recently a number of services are merging. This morning, when I wanted to login to MyBlogLog, I was told that the server is updating so I couldn’t login. After some time, I tried again and show this:

I was actually astonished! Even MyBlogLog also merged with Yahoo! now. Okay, that doesn’t matter much as I have an active Yahoo! ID. I was curious why are they making such decision and found out that these are the main reasons:

Why migrate to Yahoo! IDs?

There were a few reasons we did this:

  • Primarily this was done because most of our customer support issues were related to customers having trouble logging into the site. We found that by using the uber-secure ID system that Yahoo! uses, we could offer you more efficient logins, deeper security and faster customer service. We also found that by chasing lost emails, misplaced passwords and scrambled reset codes, we were sacrificing valuable development time, which equals less cool, new features for you.
  • This change also allows us to be introduced to millions of people who are already using Yahoo! IDs by making integration on other Yahoo! properties much easier.

Using Yahoo!’s existing ID system to manage MyBlogLog logins allows us to focus on growing the community.

Oh~ so this is it. In order to become better, more and more services are merging. Yahoo! Photos is gone for good and they have Flickr. You realize that two strong forces in the Web, Google and Yahoo, are really something! Merging services to provide better experiences for their members.. Blogger, YouTube are now Google’s. Yahoo is catching up as well… I believe there are more to name for both of these forces in the near future.

Merging seems to be a good thing, don’t you think? (Well, in certain aspects, it is not as profitable as expected.) I think it is also the time for me to merge my Blogspot blog with my Wordpress blog. I’ve always wanted to have a hosted Wordpress blog. Currently in negotiating status. But don’t worry, I will still be using my domain name - www.xiaoyenzi.com

    Yes, moving to Yahoo IDs for authentication was quite a bit of work and we’re still working through the rough edges but it’ll be worth it in the end. You have no idea how many email messages we get from people looking for misplaced passwords or requests to change screen names.

    I just made the jump to Wordpress myself and am really happy. I posted about the experience of merging several blogging platform into one.

    They moved and I hate the starting point of this, hope to get used to it soon.

    Anyway, moving over to a self-hosted Wordpress blog is always a great thing and a big leap forward in blogging! Cheers! =)

    @kenneth, in most case when the term merging is used, it means “bought by” or “sold to”…hehe and yup I did notice that you merged your ID as well, because once merge, the avatar will be the default grey smiley.

    @ian kennedy, konichiwa.. astonished to get a feedback from the Product Manager for MyBlogLog himself! cool..basically I love the concept of merging because it will be nice to have an ‘all-in-one’ solution as I’m also a Yahoo user. And thanks for the tips from your site on moving to Wordpress.

    @wayne, just give both you and the Yahoo MyBlogLog management a little time. I think you can get use to it real soon. Merging all my blogs to a self-hosted Wordpress blog is always what I wished for. Yea..I’m also excited to be a Wordpress blogger. (Doesn’t mean that I don’t like Blogger, in certain extend Blogger is still good as always)

    @babyfiona, hehe..you’re welcome.

    @jimmychin, haha..sot sot ar? at first I thought what they updating…and it turned out to be they were in the progress of merging. :D
