Mythology: Jade Rabbit who Lives in the Moon
Posted on Sep 19 in Storyby ApplePrint

Do you still remember the rabbit that lives in the Moon with Chang’e? This rabbit is either referred as the Jade Rabbit (玉兔) or Moon Rabbit. Its job is to pound a new elixir of immortal for Chang’e. There are some stories behind this tale. One story stated that this rabbit is a transformation of the son (not blood related to Wu Gang) of Wu Gang’s wife. After the incident, Wu Gang’s wife felt sorry and ordered her sons to fly up to the Moon to accompany Wu Gang, and one of them transformed into a rabbit.
Another version of this tale related to the story of Chang’e and HouYi. It is said that out of curiosity, Chang’e took the magical pill without HouYi, her husband’s knowledge. However, Chang’e accidentally swallowed the pill…HouYi quickly threw Chang’e's pet – the Jade Rabbit, towards her, so that it could accompany her, making her less lonely wherever she went. And that is how the Jade Rabbit end up in the Moon pounding a new elixir of immortal for her.
The Japanese also have such a rabbit tale, instead, the Moon Rabbit is pounding mochi – a Japanese cake.
Whatever tales behind, it is amazingly cool that the moon surface looks like a rabbit pounding something… haha..
