Traditional Mooncakes

Category: Food and Drinks

I know the mooncake festival is over now, but still have the mood on sharing some information about mooncakes. Whenever this festival is around, I will think of my friend, Stanley. He started baking mooncakes in his early age and now he handles everything in his mooncake shop. This year, is the first time I bought mooncakes from him using my very own money. The previous years, I brought my family to his shop and purchased mooncakes (using Dad’s money).

Sin Hian Chia Enterprise is a very well-known name among the Chinese in Kuching. It’s an old shop selling Chinese delicacy for years. It’s well known for the traditional mooncakes they produced. Although nowadays, they also introduce new flavors such as tiramisu paste, chocolate cheese paste…and a lot more.

This shop lot is located in the city among one of the oldest buildings that you can find in Kuching. During mooncake festival, a lot of people will visit this shop to purchase their favorite mooncakes at a reasonable price.

Why people still going back to buy the traditional mooncakes? Because it’s cheaper and tastier compared to other ‘branded’ mooncakes with very beautiful packings. One of my readers said that people buy mooncakes is not because of the mooncakes but the packing. Somehow in certain extend, I have to agree with this. Because it’s the packing that catches one’s attention.

However, attractive packaging also means ‘prettier’ pricing. That’s why when we bought these mooncakes, it cost us RM20++… see the price difference? But I didn’t know how they taste like, as Orange had eaten them.

It was Sunday when I visited Sin Hian Chia Enterprise. Quite a lot of customers there, doing their last-minute-purchasing of mooncakes, because Tuesday was the Mooncake Festival. I bought quite a lot of mooncakes too!

The above picture is another type of mooncake known as “La Go” (捞糕). I don’t really get what the name means but it is a sweet delicacy which I’m not favoring it.

After choosing a variety of mooncakes, Stanley helped me to pack them and later gave me a special discount…haha…all together RM50. And until today, I still have some mooncakes in the fridge…too many till I haven’t have the time to eat them…(as I also need to control my diet)

This is a funny post of Stanley while he was calculating the mooncakes prices.

These are the mooncakes that cost me RM50 after discount. The mooncakes you all saw in my previous post is bought from Sin Hian Chia Enterprise.

P/S: Sin Hian Chia Enterprise (新香斋企业) and Sin Hian Chia & Co.(新香斋公司) is two different companies. This is not a sponsored review, all the above content is based on my personal opinion.
