A Vegetarian Dinner
Posted on Nov 07 in Food and Drinksby ApplePrint

Last Sunday, my family and I went to a vegetarian dinner, sort of a charity dinner for the Buddhist association at Sarawak Golfer Club, somewhere near the state library. (I’m not a Buddhist, I claim myself as a free thinker) This is the first time I waited so long before I could start eating. We waited for a group of monks known as Dharma (guess they are from Tibet, they communicate with the audience in English) until around 8pm then food is served.

Bored, nothing to do there. I just brought along my camera..so I was busy taking pictures. Everyone had a candle, that’s for later use.
The candles were lit. It was used to welcome those monks. We had to stand up and hold the candle in our hands and sing the prayer “Om ma mi be meh hom“.

And then after a while, when the monks were seated, we still need to stand up and read this thing in the paper. It’s like a thank you speech, to show our appreciation to them. (English version was read by the MC first, before the Chinese version)

Then, finally we got to eat our dinner. This is a vegetarian dinner, no meat is served. I have no problem with this because I used to be a vegetarian myself. Things, almost everything changed after mom is not around anymore. T__T
Okay…now the first dish is a mixture of many “cold storage” food. We call this “cold dish” (冷盘). Notice the marinated “jelly fish”? That’s not really jelly fish. Suppose to be white Auricularia auricula (白木耳).

After that, we had soup..looks like shark fin soup.

Fried “fish” with black pepper sauce. This is the best dish among all the other dishes.

Vegetarian “Beggar Chicken”.

And this is the only dish with green veggies...cooked with “abalone”.

Vegetarian fried “prawn” with mayonnaise. The mayonnaise should be their own ingredient, the lemon taste is very strong.

And then…fried noodles in thick starch.

Lastly, some fresh fruits.

I was so full back then.
