Network Connection Fix

Category: Tech Stuff

I’m not major in networking. However, I’m responsible for any problems regarding IT. Performing one man show in the office, I have no one to discuss with. Who can come to my rescue? Again, I consulted my friend, Google.

Yesterday, I received a Skype call from a colleague in another branch, telling me her problems. I was stunned for a while, because most of the possible solutions I could think of, didn’t help. Luckily, I’ve managed to find a solution for it.

Scenario:

The computer (Windows XP Home Edition) is connected to the Internet. LAN connection status is fine. Able to use application such as Skype, online Java system. However, cannot access any website with Internet Explorer. A “Page cannot be displayed” error occurs. Other computers in the LAN network able to access to any website without problems.

Analysis:

I thought it was the cable connection problem, but the cable and modem is functioning well. The Internet Option for LAN settings is already set to “Automatically detect settings” in Internet Explorer, but problem still occur. I even ask my colleague to install Firefox yet failed to solve the problem.

To ensure that the TCP/IP network protocol is working well, I asked my colleague to go to the command prompt (Start > Run > type ‘cmd’ and press Enter). In the command prompt I asked her to type:

ping 127.0.0.1

Some responded results show up.

However, nothing happened when this is typed in the command prompt:

ping google.com

The reason I ping Google.com because Google.com has 99.99% up time. If there’s no respond, means there’s something wrong with the computer’s TCP/IP!!

Solution:

  1. Download and install XP TCP/IP Repair. (It’s a freeware)
  2. Click on the Reset TCP/IP button.
  3. Restart computer.

    @rambochai,
    Be careful when using this software, use it only you have the problem like what I mentioned in this article. If you have problems linking computer in a LAN, then you should check the LAN connection, make sure they are in the same workgroup.
