Mini Buildings

Motherboard

Tall buildings are very common in cities. Now here you see a mini version of buildings of a city. If you are reading this, you are probably accessing these “mini buildings” which resided in the rectangular box of yours.

Yup! That’s how your motherboard looks like from a certain angle. Lately, I was busy doing my “techie” job in the office. Well, it’s part of my job description. LiewCF once said that I’m a geek girl. Guess he is right.

Hmm..not really geek lah, because there are still plenty of tech stuff which is beyond my knowledge.

One of the computers in the office always had a problem of cannot be switched on and keep beeping on each start up. 1 long beep and 3 short beeps – yea, that’s something to do with the RAM. Each time, I would just unplug the RAM and clean it, ensure the RAM slot in the motherboard is clean as well. The problem was then solved, for severals months and sometimes just days. And the same problem would occur again.

Until that day, no matter how hard I tried (cleaning both RAM and RAM slots, even switching RAM slots), it showed no good sign. I then announced the RAM slots in the motherboard dead. That’s when a new task was automatically assigned to me – replacing a new motherboard.

It’s a DDR not DDR2 RAM, therefore we had to purchase a rather “old” model motherboard or else, we will have to purchase new DDR2 RAM as well. Don’t ask me what brand is this, because I can’t find any label on it. But one thing for sure, it’s made in China. Whatever…

The funny thing was, this motherboard is small in size. When attached to the existing casing, I was unable to plug the power switch, power led, etc wires to the corresponding slots. The wires are too short, unless I have the ready-made extension, or make my own extension (Holy sh!t! I don’t even know how). I was really lucky because at that moment, there is an old PC that can’t be used any longer, so I just swapped the casing.

Thanks to the technical short course (it was really brief) that I attended once, or else looking at a box of messy wires would have be a nightmare for me. If you wonder which IT field I am in, my answer is – general. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in computing (or computer science – more on software development!) Technical course was never covered in my syllabus. I’m proud of myself for learning the technical part mostly on my own, with the help of my dear friend, Google.

So, I work as a technical support, webmaster (design + scripting) cum network administrator in this ƒuck!ng company! And doing extra non-related job such as closing monthly sales! (WTF!!!) And sad to say I am paid monthly RM1,000 only (approximately USD320) for all these!~ (That’s why I take my time blogging and “shaking legs” here. No point working too hard.) And just few minutes ago, I was asked about the process of my PHP project (sorry to disappoint everyone again, I’m really new in PHP and MySQL. I wonder what had I studied all these years. Currently reading a book called MySQL/PHP Database Applicaions).

If I’m complaining so much, I should leave. If that’s what you are thinking. Well, I’m preparing. Even though I get paid low, I gain new technical knowledge everytime I solve a problem here in the office. Seeking for chance, when it’s time, I’ll leave.

Oh, one more thing to share before ending this post. This is how a processor look like. This little chip is the heart of the computer. Currently, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor can cost you around RM400 (at the time of writing this) depends on the spec.

Computer. Isn’t it amazing?

    Wow, i dont know u & orange are both PC expert lah.
    I have experienced this before, by which can’t switch on the CPU, and was diagnosed wiht motherboard dead in the workshop, it cost me RM320 to replaced it. would it be too expensive?
    how much is the market price for a motherboard now-a-day?

    And my office PC (windor 98) always shows me the “blue screen” frequently (even aft PC reformat), with msg ’system busy….blablabla…”, aft hit any key to conitnue, sometime work but most time PC hang…so shit! what would be the existed problem is? can pls advice?

    Haha..not really experts lah. We learn from experience and lots and lots of reading (when we face trouble). RM320 to replace a motherboard..hmm..if that’s few years ago, I should say it’s expensive. Because nowadays computer hardware is getting cheaper with good spec. The new motherboard for my office cost RM220 (I still think it’s expensive). An average motherboard (by the time of writing this) has a price ranging from RM200 to RM300. Better ones like Gigabyte or Asus of course will be more expensive, like around RM300 to RM400 or even higher, depends on the spec.

    Haha..”blue screen of death”, that’s the most troublesome thing to see in Windows. If after reformat still have such problem, it might be malfunction of some hardwares (not sure, have to diagnose). Sometimes hardware gets old, all sort of problems will occur. The best advise is, to get a new machine. :D

    Everytime we enter this site, we get to learn so much about technology, computer gadgets and stuff. U are indeed knowledgeable!

    And when it comes to technical problems, u definitely know how to repair the damages.

    Hardware problems are always a heavy burden for us all. And it would cost a bomb whenever we have no choice but to purchase a new hardware, just like the prices that u have mentioned here.

    But with experiences like these, we will always get to learn something new. =)

  • Haha, reminds me of my experience with various PCs and laptops. It’s easy to service PC but it’s quite hard to service a laptop. LOL, you are the first female in my database who is capable of doing such IT stuff. That’s nice!!!

  • vickie says:

    1 long beep, 3 short beeps is not the graphic/video card problem??? I thought few long beeps = RAM problem what?

  • Apple says:

    @NAFA,
    Glad that you learned something from my blog :)

    @ColourfulWorld,
    Yes, it’s rather hard for a laptop. I barely touch any laptop hardware before. Wow…really? I’m the first female in your database in this field? Cool.

    @vickie,
    Different BIOS has different beeping codes. In general, 1 long beep and 2 beeps is something to do with the video card. More beeps after the first long beep, mostly related to RAM.

    be franked, i really cannot differentiate all these, hahaha…

  • Johnny says:

    wao.. didn’t know that you know all these..

    apple, to my surprise u know hardware well, i thought u expert in softare (especially in programming stuff)…
