Adding Custom Emoticons to Your Chatbox

Category: Blogging

Most of us that own a personal blog will add a chatbox widget to communicate with readers. Yesterday, 2 of my new visitors asked me the same question on how to add custom emoticons to the chatbox. So, this post is specially dedicated to them for answering the question.

First of all, you have to identify which chatbox widget service are you using. Two of the most popular chatbox widgets are Cbox and Shoutmix. Each chatbox service has different setting. So here, I’m going to post a short tutorial on how to add custom emotions, also known as smileys, in both Cbox and Shoutmix.

[Special notes to Teddy and Winter: Yours is a Cbox widget, so just follow the Cbox guide]

Before acutally going into details on how to add custom emoticons, you have to understand that you have to host (upload) your own emoticons. Meaning, you will have to grab your own collection of emoticons (click here for full set Onionhead emoticons), and upload to any free image hosting services like Photobucket, Imageshack or TinyPic.

After you have get ready the emoticons that you wish to use, you will have to login to your chatbox widget account to edit the settings.

Cbox User

Cbox allows you to add unlimited custom emoticons. So, if you are a Cbox user, you can add as many emoticons to your chatbox as you want.  After logining in to your Cbox account, go to the Admin panel, and click on Smilies.

[1] Click on Smilies at your control panel to the left.

[2a] Type in the Code. This determines which symbol or phrase will display your custom emoticons.

[2b] This step is optional. If you want to have more than one way to display your custom emoticons, then type the alternative code here.

[3] Paste the direct link to the image which you have uploaded (to the image hosting service) earlier.

[4] If you want to add more emoticons, just click on the New Row button.

[5] After you have added all your emoticons, remember to click the Save button.

Shoutmix User

If you are using a free Shoutmix account, then you can only add 10 custom emoticons. Only premium members can add up to 500 emoticons. Once login to your Shoutmix account, click on Settings and click on Display > Smileys.

The adding of custom emoticon is pretty much the same like Cbox.

[1] Paste the direct link to the image which you have uploaded (to the image hosting service) earlier.

[2a] Type in the Code. This determines which symbol or phrase will display your custom emoticons.

[2b] This step is optional. If you want to have more than one way to display your custom emoticons, then type the alternative code here.

[3] Click the Add button to add new emoticon.

[4] Remember to click the Save settings once you are done.

That’s it. Easy right?

Hope this answer your question, Teddy and Winter. If you have any question, feel free to ask at the below comment section.

Have fun.
