I am getting very excited with my new Chinese blog. It feels great to actually blog in my own language, more expressive. I understand that some readers will not understand the language, so I was thinking what will it be like if I were to translate my Chinese blog to English with an online translator…

*You can really get a hard laugh if you can read Chinese*

As the title suggest, a new phrase have been “discovered”, known as “Dryly Fish Surface“… You must be thinking “What on earth is that?” Now…let me explain to you.

Dryly Fish Surface actually refers to….

Kolo mee.

“Kolo” means raise from water (putting something inside water and remove from water).
“Mee” means noodle.
Hence “Kolo mee” means dried noodle.

In Chinese, it is read as “Gan Lao Mian” (干捞面). Chinese characters are actually very complicated. Different characters can share the same pronunciation with different meanings. Sometimes, the same character also can have more than one meaning. And that is how funny translation occurs..

The Babel Fish translator translates the 3 Chinese characters separately so this is the result:

“Gan” - literally means dry. Translated as “Dryly”.
“Lao” - literally means fetching, scooping. Translated as “Fish”. (”fish” can be used as a verb)
“Mian” - literally means noodle, face or surface. Translated as “Surface”.

So, the translator suggested that “Gan Lao Mian” should be called “Dryly Fish Surface”.

This is not so funny, yet. Now, here comes my favorite part:

Having an unexplainable moved feeling, I felt like crying and tell the aunty of the noodle stall, “The noodle you made taste really good.”
