We know the annoying pop-ups advertisements are all over the World Wide Web when we are surfing websites. Most pop-ups are generated by Javascript and most browsers including Internet Explorer 7 and above has “pop-up blocker”. Since pop-ups are easy to “kill”, pop-unders are then being introduced. Normal pop-up blocker embeded in the browser is not able to “kill” pop-unders. This is because, pop-unders are made available by Abode Flash Plugin!!

What is pop-under anywhere? It’s the annoying online advertisement which appears “beneath” / behind your current active browser. Once the advertisement is launched, it will automatically open up a new window, showing ads without really disturbing you for the time being, until you close your current browser. (then you will have to close those extra meaningless windows)

If you are using Firefox, you can disable pop-unders in just few steps!

In your browser URL, type about:config and press enter. Then you will see something like this, if you are using Firefox 3.

This is something new in Firefox, and it generates random title like “Here be dragons!” or “This might void your warranty!”. Interesting, right? Click the button to continue.

Right click any where and select New > Integer with the preference name of privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins and enter 2 for the value. Close the config window and you’re done.

Some other possible values are:

0: Allow all popups from plugins.
1: Allow popups, but limit them to dom.popup_maximum.
2: Block popups from plugins.
3: Block popups from plugins, even on whitelisted sites.

[ via Olongcha ]

Talking about Firefox 3, here’s something very interesting. (Thanks Darren, for the info) If you haven’t know, make sure you try it out in your Firefox 3 browser.

Type about:robots in the browser URL and see what you get!

Welcome Humans! Cool, eh? Out of curiousity we sure want to see what is coming up next, so we click on the “Try Again” button and we get this:

Nothing change except for the button “Please do not press this button again”. I PRESSED! I think most of us will still press it. Did you?

Are you still not using Firefox? Start using it now.

Colleague: What do you do during your free time?
Me: Online.
Colleague: You always stay in front of the computer, when you free you still online?
Me: Yes, besides online, it’s still online. I can’t live without Internet.
Colleague:

Most people around me spend their free time watching TV dramas, chatting, gathering with friends… Those are not very tech-savvy people, they rarely touch the Internet. They questioned me on what’s so good about Internet. Well, I have to say poor souls like them always under estimate the power of Internet and the impact it can bring to us. Sooner or later, they will realise that, not to worry. (Now even senior citizens learn to online because they want to book cheap air fares.)

What is the best thing you can get from Internet?
UNLIMITED RESOURCES!
Yes, if you are a frequent Internet user, you should know that we download “a lot of things”. Then you come across file sharing sites like Rapidshare or Megaupload, just to name a few. However, if you want to enjoy unlimited download access, you have to signup as a premium member, which most of us don’t like, because we have to pay!

With the growing poluarity of Rapidshere, they have recently implemented the “CAPCHA” word verification with the so-hard-to-identify cat images embedded in the verification characters. But now, they also come out with the “Happy Hour” campaign.

On certain time, you are able to download files from Rapidshare without any waiting time. That’s the so called Happy Hour. But when will such hour occur? We don’t know. But now we can know by installing a small Firefox extension called the HappyChecker.

However, the HappyChecker Firefox add-on requires you to login before installation. This add-on is an experimental one. But it works and able to detect Rapidshare’s Happy Hour. This plugin will check for the happy hour on half-hourly basis.

It does not have any control interface. Right after you install the plugin, it will start to function. When the Happy Hour is detected, a window will pop up showing this:

I recommend you to disable this plugin if you are not planning to download anything from Rapidshare, or else you will get the notification (if Happy Hour is active) every half-hourly.

Download HappyChecker.

[ via eches ]

Firefox has a lot of useful plugins that can enhance your browsing experience. That’s one of the reasons you should turn down Internet Explorer (especially IE7 and above) and switch to Firefox. Or at least try some other powerful browsers like Opera, Flock, etc..

Now, Firefox 3 is coming soon, real soon. I’ve tried Firefox 3 Beta and I’ve seen some good features and improvement. So, I’m going to download Firefox 3 once officially launched.

Find out more about Firefox 3 and join the Firefox Download Day 2008!

I don’t know how to convince others to try using FireFox (FF) browser.
Currently, FireFox has been evolved to FireFox2. More flexible and great (well, I’m not an advance user, so I can’t give much comment about this)

However, many websites or blogs, even some “unofficial” html tags cannot function well in FireFox. I know that Blogger’s blog usually is best view with Internet Explorer(IE). But I’m developing my blog using FF, so I recommend you to view my blog in FF. (Although the autostart=”false” attribute of the embeded tag is not working in FF. NOTE: embed is not a standard tag. It’s meant for IE.)

I don’t care how FF really works. In short, I feel that by using FF, you can grab back the web – surf faster.

Not until this morning when I view my blog with both FF and IE. And what a difference! It seems that my IE is not supporting .png files properly. Take a look at the difference, those images suppose to be in transparent background.

Update: This problem happens in IE6.
