Maple Leaves

Category: Random Issue

Maple leaf is something that can’t be found here, in my hometown. Being located right on the spot at the Equator, my hometown has very “unique” 4 seasons - it’s summer all time. That’s why in many movie trailers, we usually see something like “Coming this Summer”…I will think “Summer means when???”

Haha, okay back to maple leaves. Whenever I think of maple leaves, the first place come to my mind is Canada. This morning when I was thinking of writing about maple leaves, my mind just link me to Canada….but then I was thinking..Why Canada?? Not Australia? Not Japan?? I got my answer until I saw this:

How I wish I could see maple trees and maple leaves with my own eyes, especially those red maple leaves. That will definitely be a beautiful scene. Guess I’ll have to save up and plan for a vacation to a place with gorgeous maple trees. Maple leaves have very elegant shape. And gives people a feeling of calmness. Maybe I watched too much anime - maple leaves falling and blown by wind, a quiet scene.

This is a REAL maple leaf given by my late mom when she went to Australia (her last vacation). She brought back 2 maple leaves, one for me and one for my little sis. I kept mine till now. It’s changed from red to brown…after 8 years time, it sure dried up, however still in good shape. Maple leaf still remains the same just that it has changed a little. But, my life is totally different if compared to the one I had 8 years ago.

Mummy, I miss you so much.

Erm…for those of you that play or played Maple Story, have you ever think why is the game named “Maple Story”? I didn’t see a lot of maple around, only the login screen and the logo itself.

Money?

Category: Random Issue

Money comes first for people like me, you dope. Without the money, don’t expect to be healthy physically, mentally or emotionally. When you are broke, you are broke in all these three departments. All ideals goes out the window. When you are down with a terminal illness and you can’t pay for the medication, would you still think money is not important? When you know you and your dependants are going to starve, and you are offered a single job that is hazardous to your health, without a choice to choose, would you take it? Will you tell the fellow who offered you the job, “Money is not important, I must take care of my health” Would you? Would You? You hypocrite!

AhPek is very close to Dad’s age. Is that what all grown-ups have in mind? Dad’s thought was revealed here. No doubt, AhPek got some points there. Very critical issue.

Money and health?

So does that mean this is what life is all about?
Attend classes, get certificates, get job, get money - is that it?
What do you think? Please write your thoughts about this issue in the comment please. I would like to know what is in your minds.

What I think:
Money is sooooooo important that without it, you can basically get NOTHING. And that’s the main force of getting us to work, definitely - no one love to work for FREE!! Should be glad that we have enough money to use. But how much is “enough”? No one will complain about “I have too much money!” Hey, but there’s still something out there which money can never buy. (You name them!) Back to the question: Money and Health, which important? I don’t like to answer this question. It smells too materialistic. Perhaps, “Without the money, don’t expect to be healthy physically, mentally or emotionally.” is meant for the “grown-ups“. Youngsters which is beh kia si (no scared of dying, 不知天高地厚) like us, will never think of that first! Love blinds!

Lawyers/Judges and Wigs?

Category: Random Issue

Last night, went for a drink with my boyfriend. The TV was broadcasting a Cantonese drama, showing a scene in the court, where lawyers and judge were debating a case. Then my boyfriend started to ask, “Have you ever wonder why lawyers must wear a wig?” Well..I don’t know as well. But it seems to be so natural that when you think about lawyers or judges, you (most of us) will have a picture of them wearing a wig in your mind!

Is there an affair between lawyers/judges and wigs? =P Bring along this curiosity back home, I googled for the answer. This is what I found:
Why are wigs worn by lawyers?

Although English legal dress has a long history, it has for the most part evolved without written regulation. Before the 17th century lawyers did not wear wigs, but professional discipline required that their hair and beards should be moderately short.

Nevertheless, the introduction of wigs into polite society during the reign of Charles II (1660-1685) was an innovation, and lawyers began wearing wigs in the 1680’s.

In the 1860’s, lawyers were permitted to remove their wigs during a heat wave. This attracted some comment in the press and it was suggested that wigs be abandoned altogether by the legal profession. Although the proposal met with little support, it has been a common occurrence ever since for judges to allow wigs to be left off in very hot weather.

And there’s a book called Legal Habits: A Brief Sartorial History of Wig, Robe & Gown by Ede and Ravenscroft. Get to know about this book (pdf version available) from Michel-Adrien. I’ve downloaded this e-book (from Michel’s blog) but I’m too lazy to read.

So it’s because wig was once a great fashion back in the 17th century and because of professional discipline they wore wigs until today, this practice is still going on. But wait, according to BBC News, there’s an argument over this issue.

What I think of is…WTH with those wigs? Remember Commodore Norrington? Captain Jack Sparrow is much more handsome.

Disturbing Noise

Category: Random Issue

Last Sunday, I was at home whole day and heard someone singing karaoke. It was my neighbor. They really love to sing. However, the songs that they sing most likely are oldies. Most important, sometimes the singing is really teruk (bad).

I wonder if they ever participate in any singing competition here. Damn..it’s so annoying and disturbing when you are trying to do things such as studying. I’m lucky enough that I don’t have to do any studying anymore. Pity of my sister when she has to do her revision and still need to listen to the annoying voices.

Being mischievous, I went out my house and bring along my mp3 recorder to record the song they sang. Here is the sound clip:
